Summary
The Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) serves as the City government’s chief financial agency. OMB’s team of analysts and experts is responsible for assembling and overseeing the Mayor’s expense and capital budgets, which fund the services and activities of approximately 90 City agencies and entities.
Within OMB’s Management and Operations Division, the Policy and Operations Research Task Force is primarily tasked with analyzing the fiscal and economic impacts of the City’s policy initiatives, evaluating City agencies’ operations and programs, and conducting ad-hoc quantitative analysis. The Data & Analytics Unit supports these tasks by conducting data-intensive work and modernizing data workflows for other task forces within the agency. Key responsibilities of the unit include building and maintaining an automated cloud pipeline for collecting, processing, and reflecting budget-related data. The team collaborates with units across the agency to identify technological solutions to enhance data collection, processing, and visualization.
Job Description
The Data Analyst & Engineer intern will focus on analyzing complex data and developing proficiency in collecting, cleaning, and visualizing data to identify patterns, trends, and correlations. Specific responsibilities will include:
- Assisting OMB staff in building a data pipeline and working with cloud computing frameworks and platforms.
- Collaborating with teams across functional areas to automate data processing within a cloud computing platform.
- Assisting with preprocessing of structured and unstructured data.
- Presenting information using various data visualization techniques.
- Performing quality assurance testing on datasets and coding files.
- Assisting in developing actionable recommendations to ensure the financial sustainability of services.
Qualifications
Required:
- Major in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related fields.
- Proficiency in a popular data science programming language (e.g., Python, R, SQL).
- Proficiency with data visualization software like PowerBI, Tableau, or plotting libraries.
- Knowledge of database principles.
- Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
- A high capacity for independence, relationship-building, and creativity.
- The ability to manage multiple, often-competing priorities.
- Problem-solving attitude.
- A positive outlook for challenges and potential setbacks.
- Flexibility to work with unknowns and deal with unexpected events.
- Receptiveness to feedback and patience to act on it.
- Ability to think critically and critique assumptions.
- Ability to communicate conflicts and disagreement in a timely and respectful manner.
- Interest in using automated scripting and modern data tools to clean data and create efficient data pipelines and workflows.
- Interest in and knowledge about NYC government and policy efforts.
- Proficiency in MS Word and Excel.
Graduate Intern Specific Requirements:
- Must be currently enrolled in or accepted into a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university, or law school.
- Candidates should possess strong analytical, quantitative, research, and communication skills.

- Educational or professional experience in the described areas.
Requirements

Compensation/Duration
- Compensation: $20 per hour.
- Duration: 10 weeks, from June 1, 2026, to August 7, 2026.
- Work Schedule: Regular workday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. – no evenings or weekends.
- Location: This is a hybrid position with in-person days located at OMB’s offices at 255 Greenwich Street.
