Job Description
Mechanical Engineering Intern | Amperesand
The Tone:
This is an internship at Amperesand, located on-site in one of our global hubs (San Francisco, Reno, or Singapore). Amperesand is reinventing how the world powers its most critical systems by building hardware and software that rewrites the power infrastructure playbook. This role is crucial for developing, building, testing, and validating next-generation solid-state transformers (SSTs) and power stage modules (PSMs) to support a new era of energy abundance.
The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Seasonal
• Location: In-person, San Francisco, CA
• Pay: $30–$45 hourly
• Mission: This intern will contribute to building and testing next-generation solid-state transformers and power stage modules to revolutionize power infrastructure for demanding energy consumers.
• Tech Stack: CAD software (3D EXPERIENCE, CATIA V6/V5, SolidWorks, NX, Creo), FEA, CFD, Ansys, Jira
What You’ll Actually Do
• Design: Create detailed mechanical designs and model complex electro-mechanical parts, including plastics, sheet metal, and high-voltage connectors, using CAD software.
• Analyze: Perform mechanical design analysis using first principle calculations or commercial simulation software for structural FEA, thermal CFD, vibration, and fatigue assessments.
• Solve Challenges: Address packaging challenges involving electrical isolation, sealing, thermal dissipation, EMI/EMC shielding, and mechanical shock/vibration.
• Prototype & Test: Perform prototype development, fabrication, assembly, and mechanical testing of new designs, defining and executing validation test plans.
• Improve & Document: Support root-cause analysis of design issues, lead iterative improvements, and create 2D drawings with GD&T, engineering documentation, BOMs, and release packages.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Final year undergraduate standing or graduate study in Mechanical Engineering or a closely-related field, with a deep understanding of mechanical fundamentals including statics, dynamics, heat transfer, and materials.
• Experience: Expertise in CAD modeling using 3D EXPERIENCE (CATIA V6/V5), SolidWorks, NX, or Creo, and comfort with root-cause analysis, failure mode resolution, and mechanical reliability testing.
• Skills: CAD modeling, mechanical fundamentals, working knowledge of materials (metals, plastics, ceramics, gaskets, potting compounds).
• Bonus: Strong background in structural, thermal, and vibration analysis using commercial software (e.g., Ansys); proficiency in GD&T, tolerance analysis, and DFM/DFA principles; familiarity with PCBAs, connectors, and mechanical integration of high-density electronic assemblies; experience with high-volume manufacturing processes; experience with medium- to high-voltage systems and insulation coordination.
