Shirley Contracting Company, LLC is actively seeking talented individuals for our Summer Associate Program. This is an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience on various projects within the Richmond/Hampton Roads area.
About the Program
As a Summer Associate, you will receive invaluable field and management exposure across a diverse range of project types, including:
- Civil construction
- Utility projects
- Bridge construction
- Structures
These projects vary significantly in scale, ranging from $1 million to over $500 million dollars, providing a comprehensive learning experience. Beyond project work, our program offers several opportunities for:
- Networking with industry professionals
- Engaging in community service initiatives
- Participating in learning sessions to foster personal and professional growth
Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who possess the following qualities and skills:
- Outstanding communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
- A dedicated team player with demonstrated leadership abilities.
- A general understanding of and/or a strong desire to work in the heavy highway / civil construction industry.
- Ready and willing to learn new skills and enhance their career growth.
- Proficient in computer skills and corresponding programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Potential Summer Assignments
During your summer with Shirley Contracting, your assignments could include:
- Learning how Shirley acquires new work by:
- Soliciting and providing preliminary evaluations of subcontractor bids.
- Performing quantity takeoffs.
- Scoping of bid packages.
- Assisting field supervision with self-perform and subcontractor crews by:
- Assisting with schedule planning / management.
- Tracking daily quantities.
- Receiving / tracking tickets.
- Reviewing Foreman Daily Timecards.
- Learning the business and financial management associated with a project, including:
- Administering subcontracts.
- Reviewing requests for payment.
- Managing submittals and RFIs (Requests for Information).
- Tracking change orders.
- Tracking budgets.
- Establishing positive working relationships with customers and co-workers while learning about the company’s culture and policies.
Requirements & Eligibility
- Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the US on a full-time basis to be considered.
- Must pass pre-employment physical/drug screening.
