Strategic Priorities, Emerging Talent Intern | Metropolitan Transportation Authority
The Tone:
This is an internship at Metropolitan Transportation Authority, located in Jamaica, NY. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority operates and improves public transportation across its agencies, including the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). This role is crucial for supporting executive leadership in advancing high-impact initiatives across the LIRR to enhance operational effectiveness, financial efficiency, and service quality. The intern will contribute to data-driven projects that directly inform strategic decisions.

• Pay: $19–$21 hourly
• Team: Strategic Priorities team, supporting executive leadership within the Office of the President
• Mission: Support the Strategic Priorities team in advancing high-impact initiatives to improve operational effectiveness, financial efficiency, and service quality at the Long Island Rail Road.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Data Preparation: Extract, clean, and organize data from internal reports and databases.
• Data Analysis: Conduct analyses using SQL, Excel, or similar tools to derive insights.
• Reporting & Visualization: Develop clear charts, tables, and summary slides for leadership materials.
• Insight Generation: Draft short analytical summaries that explain key findings and their implications.
• Strategic Research: Conduct benchmarking research on peer commuter railroads and summarize key takeaways for potential improvements.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Matriculated undergraduate student in good standing with at least a 2.5 GPA, or a graduate student in good standing with at least a 2.8 GPA. Preferred majors include Data/Data Analysis, Statistics, Operations Research, Business Analytics, Transportation Planning, Business Management, or a related field.
• Experience: No specific years required. Must be authorized to work in the United States and submit a transcript.
• Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills. Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks effectively under pressure, and maintain a keen eye for detail while being an active team player.
