The Tone:
This is a hybrid role based in Washington, D.C., requiring a minimum of two days in the office weekly, with potential for up to four days in June and July. The Human Rights Campaign is dedicated to promoting LGBTQ+ equality. This position ensures the precise financial tracking and management of revenue across the organization’s various entities, supporting its mission through robust financial operations. The Staff Accountant plays a critical part in maintaining financial integrity and compliance, directly contributing to the organization’s operational efficiency and transparency.

• Team: Key member of the Finance team, collaborates closely with Development and other Finance staff.
• Mission: This person ensures accurate and timely recording, reconciliation, and analysis of all revenue streams, upholding compliance with established procedures, GAAP, and donor restrictions for the Human Rights Campaign.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft Excel, MS Office, Microsoft Dynamics NAV/Business Central (preferred), donor databases

What You’ll Actually Do
• Revenue Processing & Validation: Record, review, and validate daily revenue transactions from multiple streams, including ACH, credit card, cash, and check activity, accurately within both the donor database and general ledger. This includes preparing and processing all necessary deposits and resolving any discrepancies from nightly integrations.
• Account Reconciliation & Analysis: Prepare, analyze, and maintain comprehensive revenue-related reconciliations, such as monthly general ledger reconciliations and accounts receivable aging. You will investigate variances, resolve discrepancies, and provide clear explanations to Finance leadership as needed, including for specialized receivables like tenant rent.
• Financial Reporting & Audit Support: Ensure all revenue is recorded in strict compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and donor restrictions. You will play an active role in month-end and year-end close processes, prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation, and actively support annual audit and tax preparation processes.
• Internal Control & Process Enhancement: Maintain and strengthen internal controls related to revenue processing by identifying gaps and recommending improvements. You will also identify and implement process enhancements to improve the accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency of revenue-related reporting and support the development and updates of policies.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration & Support: Collaborate closely with the Development team to ensure accurate and complete recording of contributions, researching and resolving discrepancies in a timely manner. You will also support seasonal event activities, monitor revenue activity, and proactively communicate issues or trends to Finance leadership.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field, or equivalent experience is required. A strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal controls is essential.
• Experience: 3-5 years of relevant accounting or finance experience is required. This must include experience preparing and analyzing account reconciliations and actively supporting month-end close processes.
• Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel and MS Office suite, strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate discrepancies independently, and effective communication and collaboration skills for working across departments.
• Bonus: Nonprofit accounting experience, familiarity with fund accounting principles and donor-restricted revenue, and experience with accounting systems such as Microsoft Dynamics NAV/Business Central and donor databases are strongly preferred. A personal interest in and commitment to LGBTQ+ rights is also a bonus.
