Staff Accountant | Shake Shack

The Tone:

This Staff Accountant position is pivotal for maintaining accurate financial records, specifically around license revenue, which directly supports the business, its restaurants, and the communities it serves by ensuring sound financial practices and strategic insights.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Monthly Close: Prepare period-end entries, detailed account reconciliations, and comprehensive account analyses for owned areas, ensuring adherence to appropriate SOX documentation and support requirements.
• Reporting & AR Management: Compile weekly and monthly sales reports for both domestic and international licensing, maintain a licensing dashboard, and manage accounts receivable by preparing invoices, processing monthly cash receipts, and ensuring timely collections.
• Compliance & Audit Support: Support compliance with SOX key controls for owned accounts and processes, coordinating effectively with internal and external auditors to provide complete, timely, and accurate responses to information requests.
• Process Optimization: Review existing processes, structures, and systems to identify and implement improvement opportunities, focusing on simplification, standardization, and the reduction of manual, Excel-based activities to help shorten the close timeline.
• Financial Analysis & External Reporting: Prepare detailed balance sheet and income statement fluctuation analyses, provide support to the Tax and Financial Reporting teams, and ensure adherence to all external reporting timelines.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance, coupled with a fundamental understanding of US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and SOX compliance requirements.
• Experience: Demonstrate 1–3 years of direct accounting experience garnered in either a private industry setting or through public accounting practice.
• Skills: Proficiently utilize Microsoft Office suite applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, alongside a confident grasp of US GAAP and SOX principles.
• Bonus: Prior experience within the restaurant or retail industries, experience gained at a Big 4 public accounting firm, or actively pursuing a CPA certification is preferred.
