Staff Accountant | Stillwater Sciences

The Tone:
Stillwater Sciences is an employee-owned environmental consulting firm with approximately 130 employees across the Western U.S., specializing in scientifically based solutions for aquatic, terrestrial, and watershed resource management. This is a full-time Staff Accountant role based in our Sacramento, CA office, supporting our day-to-day business operations. This position is vital for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring the company’s financial integrity, and contributing to its long-term sustainability and strategic growth. • Team: Works with accounting and administrative staff, reporting to the Controller.
• Mission: Maintain accurate financial records and support day-to-day business operations to ensure financial integrity and company sustainability.
• Tech Stack: Deltek Vantagepoint, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook), Adobe Acrobat.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Reconcile: Prepare monthly bank reconciliations, research routine reconciling items, and accurately maintain and reconcile prepaid expense accounts as well as fixed asset activity.
• Process: Handle weekly Accounts Payable vouchers for assigned direct-bill vendors and other recurring expenses, providing backup support for general AP processing.
• Prepare: Generate and post routine general journal entries, cash disbursement entries, accruals, and other necessary accounting transactions.
• Support: Actively contribute to month-end close activities, including the preparation of account reconciliations and gathering supporting documentation using Deltek Vantagepoint.
• Assist: Aid in the calculation, tracking, and recording of sales tax, business license fees, and other applicable taxes, while also supporting accounting process improvements and special projects.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Associate degree in accounting, or currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, with a working knowledge of basic financial accounting principles, including accrual accounting, cutoff periods, account reconciliations, and capitalization concepts.
• Experience: 1–2 years of accounting experience, including work with account reconciliations, Accounts Payable, journal entries, or month-end close activities.
• Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, good verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational and time-management skills with careful attention to detail, and intermediate Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, Outlook), along with familiarity with Adobe Acrobat.
• Bonus: Experience using an ERP financial software system (Deltek Vantagepoint preferred), experience working in an architecture or engineering firm or another industry that maintains job cost or project cost information, and experience with Excel functions like PivotTables and SUMIF.
