Staff Accountant | Alliant Human Capital

The Tone:
This is a full-time role with Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation (PBMR), a non-profit organization located in Chicago, IL. PBMR works to restore human dignity through hospitality, hope, and healing, building relationships and promoting restorative justice for youth and families impacted by violence. As Staff Accountant, you will be crucial in ensuring the accurate and timely management of financial transactions, directly supporting the operational stability that allows PBMR to fulfill its vital community mission.

• Mission: Owns the accurate processing of payroll, accounts receivable, and general ledger reconciliations to support the organization’s financial health.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Process Payroll: Execute semi-monthly payroll processing, including setting up and maintaining employee information, benefits, and deductions, ensuring timely disbursement and accurate record-keeping.
• Manage Cash and Accounts Receivable: Prepare and post bank deposits and cash receipts, identify restricted and unrestricted funds, maintain supporting documentation, and generate accounts receivable invoices.
• Conduct General Ledger Reconciliations: Prepare and analyze month-end balance sheet account reconciliation packages, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
• Support Financial Audits: Collaborate with the Controller and Senior Accountant during the annual external audit process by providing necessary documentation and assistance.
• Resolve Inquiries and Maintain Records: Address employee inquiries regarding paychecks and fringe benefits while accurately maintaining employee files and payroll records.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Management, with core domain knowledge in financial statements, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll, and a strong understanding of GAAP accounting standards.
• Experience: Minimum of one to two years of experience in accounting software and practical application of financial statements, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processes.
• Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, coupled with good proofreading, verbal, and written communication skills. Demonstrates critical thinking, strong organizational skills, and keen attention to detail.
• Bonus: Knowledge of non-profit accounting, prior experience using QuickBooks and payroll systems (such as Paychex, Paycom, or Intuit), ability to work collaboratively in a team, a willingness to learn new skills, and an honest, ethical approach to maintaining confidentiality and communicating in a restorative justice manner.
