Sign Shop Technician | University of Virginia

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at the University of Virginia, located in Charlottesville, VA. The Facilities Management (FM) Department supports the extensive research, academic, and patient care programs of the University. This crucial role is responsible for creating a wide range of dynamic visuals, including signage and graphic production, that are utilized across the University’s grounds and UVA Health.

• Mission: To produce, design, and install a diverse array of signs and graphics that align with University branding and operational needs.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Fabricate: Create various signs, including vinyl decals, environmental graphics, name plates, banners, ADA, and wayfinding signage using specialized equipment such as computer engravers, woodworking tools, and large format printers.
• Design: Utilize layout and design skills to ensure all produced signs adhere to University branding guidelines and national standards for consistency and impact.
• Install: Mount interior and exterior signage across Grounds and UVA Health facilities, employing hand and power tools and interpreting construction drawings or floor plans.
• Operate: Manage and operate a range of small hand and power tools (e.g., saws), along with larger equipment and vehicles such as pick-up trucks, tractors, mobile platforms, and Bobcat.
• Comply: Adhere to all applicable traffic laws, operator instructions, required safety clothing and protection, and federal, state, and local regulations during all tasks.

The Must-Haves
• Background: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Experience: One year of experience in a sign shop or a related field, specifically in the creation or manufacturing of industrial signs and displays.
• Skills: A valid Driver’s license is required for operating vehicles and performing delivery services.
• Bonus: Strong preference for carpentry experience in the fabrication and installation of signage, highly preferred experience with commercial signage, and knowledge of creative programs like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
