Seascape Corporate Footprint Analysis Internship | World Wildlife Fund
The Tone:
This is an internship at World Wildlife Fund, a global conservation organization working in over 100 countries to help people and nature thrive. WWF partners with communities, companies, and governments to protect wildlife, conserve vital habitats, and advance sustainable solutions. This role is crucial in supporting WWF’s efforts to engage businesses in the ocean economy, transforming their operations to avoid and reduce negative environmental and social impacts. The project provides critical insights into major companies operating in priority seascapes, informing strategies that protect biodiversity and promote nature-positive outcomes for the ocean.

• Mission: This intern will conduct market research and geospatial analysis to understand the business operations of companies in key ocean sectors, helping inform strategies for nature-positive outcomes in ocean conservation.
• Tech Stack: Excel, Word, Tableau / Microsoft BI, GIS files, ESRI ArcGIS, Bloomberg Terminal, WWF’s SIGHT platform
What You’ll Actually Do
• Research Plan: Develop a comprehensive research plan and approach for market research and spatial analysis, including a timeline, milestones, and deliverables, integrating previous corporate mapping efforts.
• Company Identification: Create a prioritized list of companies and financial institutions for key ocean sectors, leveraging existing research and analyzing financial flows between corporate actors.
• Attribute Definition: Define a list of key company attributes to research, such as business type, geographic locations, major clients, ports of call, or shipping routes.
• Data Analysis and Mapping: Conduct online research to compile qualitative and quantitative data on target companies, perform spatial analysis of their geographic operations, and create maps showing overlap with conservation areas using GIS tools.
• Project Presentation: Produce a final report with recommendations for further research and company engagement, develop a PowerPoint presentation, and present findings to the OMF and broader Oceans team.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Student currently enrolled in an academic institution, able to receive academic credit, pursuing a degree in fields such as business administration, supply chain science, sustainable business, finance, environmental policy, or marine biology, with an interest in environmental policy, ocean conservation, sustainable business, and/or sustainable finance.
• Experience: Experience conducting quantitative and qualitative research, compiling and analyzing large datasets, and a background in global/regional market or business research, supply chain analysis, or company operational analysis.
• Skills: Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, and at least a basic level of skill in using geographic information systems (GIS) software like ESRI ArcGIS or QGIS for spatial analysis and map creation.
