Revenue Accountant | Gusto

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Gusto, located in our New York office (hybrid, 2-3 days per week). Gusto builds essential payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR solutions to support the small business economy. This Revenue Accountant position is a critical contributor, owning the end-to-end revenue recognition process for the Gusto Retirement segment while supporting new revenue products. The role is vital for ensuring financial integrity as Gusto scales, and you will have the chance to build and leverage AI tools and automation to streamline accounting processes.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Revenue Recognition: Own end-to-end revenue recognition for the Gusto Retirement segment (401K SaaS, IRA, AUM fees, plan administration).
• Financial Reporting: Prepare monthly journal entries, subledger reconciliations, and supporting schedules for retirement revenue streams.
• Compliance: Apply ASC 606 guidance to complex arrangements, including variable consideration, contract modifications, and principal vs. agent assessments.
• Automation: Build and maintain automated solutions using AI tools, Python/SQL, or Excel scripting to eliminate manual work.
• Process Improvement: Identify and implement process improvements across the revenue close, reducing cycle time and increasing accuracy.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s in Accounting; Revenue Accountant with comfort with ambiguity and curiosity about AI.
• Experience: 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years focused on revenue accounting; proven track record building automation (scripts, tools, or workflows).
• Skills: Strong ASC 606 knowledge applied to SaaS, subscription, or fee-based models; Advanced Excel.
• Bonus: CPA preferred (active or in progress); Python or SQL a strong plus; NetSuite or revenue subledger experience; Big 4 or public accounting background; fintech or financial services experience.
