Position: Research Lab Intern

Department: Rush Alzheimers Dis Ctr-ResFac

Work Type: Restricted Part Time (less than 0.5 FTE)

Shift: Shift 2 (3:00 PM – 7:00 PM)

Pay: $18 per hour (Pay is determined by factors like education, experience, skills, internal equity and market data.)

Summary:

The Research Lab Intern assists basic science and/or clinical (biological) research staff to conduct laboratory tests and experiments. The intern will observe, learn technical skills, and conduct routine laboratory tests and experiments under supervision. They will exemplify the Rush mission, vision, and values and act in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Required Job Qualifications:

• Must be detail oriented and have good organizational, decision-making, and communication skills.
• Must exercise good judgement and demonstrate the ability to work in a team.
• Must have ability to multitask and good time management skills.
• Must demonstrate computer proficiency.
• Some high school required.

Responsibilities:

• Under supervision, observe human brain harvesting, dissection, and preservation.
• Observe and assist with handling of postmortem brain tissue, including but not limited to:
• Making solutions
• Tissue tracking and maintenance
• Tissue processing
• Embedding
• Sectioning
• Manual stains and Immunohistochemistry
• Analyses
• Observe and prepare biological samples, such as blood and DNA for Laboratory analysis.
• Observe and assist with basic microscopy, digital slide scanning and organization.
• Use specialized computer software to collect experimental data.
• Assist with storage and documentation of biological samples and Tissue sections.
• Set up, maintain, and clean laboratory instruments and equipment, such as microscopes, scales, and test tubes.
• Operate traditional laboratory instruments, advanced robotics, and automated equipment to conduct experiments.
• Document work including equipment settings, procedures, and results according to lab protocols. Share observations and results with supervisor.
