Job Description

Job Title: Natural Resource Worker (Temporary, Non-Exempt)

Department: Parks & Rec

Salary: The hiring range for this position is $18.00 per hour. Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requirements and internal equity. This is a part-time, FLSA non-exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with Local Government Personnel Policy, P-60.

Remote Work Eligibility: This position is not eligible for remote work. All County staff must maintain residence within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Job Summary/Objective

This position involves performing routine semi-skilled work focused on the maintenance of active community parks, grounds, and buildings, with a particular emphasis on natural resource management and restoration.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Control invasive plants using manual techniques and/or herbicides.
  • Monitor current and future restoration projects to ensure progress and success.
  • Provide care for restoration plantings, including watering as needed.
  • Conduct assessments of non-native invasive plant species on parkland.
  • Accurately identify both native and non-native plant species.
  • Assist with revegetation projects, which include tree planting, overseeding, and the installation of native plants.
  • Participate in volunteer events focused on invasive plant removal.
  • Organize, deliver, and procure necessary tools and supplies for projects.
  • Conduct outreach to staff and citizens regarding invasive species issues.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned to support park and natural resource management.

Competency: Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Some knowledge of invasive plant management principles and best practices.
  • Basic knowledge of the native flora, fauna, geology, and ecology specific to Albemarle County.
  • Ability to safely and efficiently operate power equipment, various hand tools, and chainsaws.
  • Understanding of Field Safety procedures relevant to outdoor work.

Required Education and Experience

  • Some experience in invasive plant management.
  • Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Physical Demands: Frequently involves walking long distances over difficult and varied terrain in diverse weather conditions. Requires lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 lbs. Regular operation of power equipment, hand tools, and field survey equipment.
  • Mental Demands: Requires sustained attention and safety awareness to navigate potentially hazardous conditions.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Some contact with the public, staff, and external professionals is expected, requiring judgment, tact, and interpretation skills to effectively address issues.
