Reliability Engineer Intern | Lumentum

The Tone:
This is an internship at Lumentum, located in San Jose, California. Lumentum develops advanced optical devices that are crucial for modern AI infrastructure applications. This role is fundamental to supporting the development of automated test systems used to evaluate the performance and reliability of these devices. The intern will gain hands-on experience, contributing directly to real-world qualification and reliability programs at the intersection of hardware, software, and product reliability.

• Mission: Support the development and automation of test systems to evaluate the reliability of optical devices for AI infrastructure applications.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Lab Operations: Operate and maintain characterization equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and source measure units, ensuring adherence to ESD safety protocols.
• Test Procedure Support: Optimize and document reliability test procedures to enhance efficiency, repeatability, and the overall quality of collected data.
• Data Analysis & Reporting: Compile, review, and summarize various test data, generating comprehensive reports to communicate findings to the engineering team.
• Failure Analysis: Conduct basic failure analysis activities, including reverse bias current measurements, optical microscope inspection, and near-infrared/electroluminescence imaging.
• Test Setup Construction: Construct or modify lab fixtures and test setups, undertaking tasks such as soldering, prototyping, and integrating new equipment.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field. This is an early career internship position.
• Experience: Demonstrated strong hands-on aptitude and the ability to work effectively within a laboratory environment.
• Skills: Excellent communication and collaboration abilities for working within cross-functional teams; strong analytical and statistical skills to interpret data and draw meaningful conclusions; capability to work independently while managing assigned tasks and meeting deadlines.
• Bonus: Programming experience in Python or similar languages; basic understanding of semiconductor devices and device characterization concepts; hands-on experience with laboratory instrumentation and measurement equipment; prior internship, co-op, academic lab research, or manufacturing/engineering experience; familiarity with statistical analysis tools like JMP; proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
