The specific bureau within DEP seeking to hire is the Bureau of Environmental Compliance (BEC). BEC’s mission is to enforce environmental laws and regulations that impact public and environmental health and safety. Its focus areas include enforcing the City’s Asbestos regulations as well as the Air and Noise Codes. The BEC is structured into the Division of Air & Noise Policy, Permitting and Enforcement and the Asbestos Control Program. Key functions of the BEC include:
• Responding to air and noise code complaints.
• Inspecting and tracking asbestos removal projects.
• Certifying asbestos handlers.
• Inspecting and issuing operating certificates to stationary combustion and industrial process sources.
• Implementing the requirements of the Clean Air Act.
Job Description: Project Manager Intern (Asbestos Control Program)
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), specifically the Bureau of Environmental Compliance (BEC), is seeking to hire one (1) Project Manager Intern for its Asbestos Control Program. This position is located at DEP’s headquarters in Queens, NY, and is identified by job number 22425.
Under the general direction of a supervisor, the selected candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the proper certification of workers involved with asbestos.
Key Responsibilities include:
• Application Review and Processing: Conducting a thorough review and processing of asbestos certification applications to ensure potential workers meet the necessary requirements.
• Technical Document Interpretation: Providing technical review and interpretation of various documents, including asbestos survey reports, laboratory reports, design and construction documents, and other credentials, to determine applicant fitness for certification.
• Customer Service and Communication: Directly contacting applicants for clarification during the review process. Providing customer service via various channels such as phone calls, email, and USPS mail.
• Office Administration: Performing general office duties, which include filing, making copies, processing payments, and maintaining accurate records.
• Compliance Audits (Office and/or Field): When necessary, conducting audits, both in the office and potentially in the field, to ensure adherence to Asbestos Rules and Regulations.
• Audit-Related Tasks: For audits, preparing inspection reports, interpreting laboratory reports, reviewing air sampling reports, issuing violations, preparing detailed case files, and potentially providing testimony at Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH) hearings.
Qualifications:
Candidates must possess one of the following academic qualifications from an accredited college or university:
• A baccalaureate degree in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, landscape architecture, architectural technology, construction, construction management, construction technology, sustainable design, urban planning, urban studies, city planning, transportation planning, business administration, or public administration.
• A master’s degree in architecture that is the first professional degree in architecture.

Salary Range:
• Minimum Salary: $56,313.00
• Maximum Salary: $64,760.00
