Production System Engineer Project Intern (Server DevOps) | ByteDance

This Production System Engineer Project Intern role is crucial for ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the company’s global server infrastructure, which powers its self-built data centers across the United States and Europe. The intern will gain hands-on experience by contributing to impactful short-term projects within a professional environment.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Operations: Participate directly in the deployment, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance of server fleets, encompassing both CPU and GPU hardware.
• Automation: Develop scripts and small tools using languages like Python, Bash, or similar to automate operational tasks that are repetitive.
• Troubleshooting: Learn to diagnose and resolve real issues within Linux environments, covering aspects such as the operating system, hardware, storage, networking, and performance.
• Analysis: Investigate infrastructure data and metrics to identify trends, pinpoint areas for improvement, and support incident investigations and root-cause analyses.
• Collaboration: Work with engineers from hardware, operations, platform, and supply chain teams on various projects, helping to write and improve documentation and internal knowledge bases.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level Bachelor’s or Master’s student in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field.
• Experience: Some practical experience with basic Linux administration and troubleshooting, as well as scripting or programming (Python, Bash, Go, or similar). Basic understanding of hardware, OS concepts, networking, distributed systems, and exposure to server hardware, firmware (BIOS/UEFI), or system architecture.
• Skills: Linux administration, scripting for automation, troubleshooting complex technical issues, and foundational knowledge of server infrastructure components.
• Bonus: Hands-on experience derived from academic projects, lab work, previous internships, open-source contributions, or competitions; curiosity regarding AI agents, LLMs, or AI-powered automation; strong problem-solving skills; and effective communication for team collaboration.
