About the Job
This job is for a Pharmacy Intern, assisting in drug distribution tasks under the supervision of a pharmacist. The intern will function according to established procedures and guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications
• Licensure: Must possess a current license or trainee license as required by the state board where services will be provided:
• MD: Pharmacy Intern or Pharmacy Technician license through Maryland Board of Pharmacy
• OH: Pharmacy Intern or Pharmacy Technician license through Ohio Board of Pharmacy
• WV: Pharmacy Intern License (Registration) or Pharmacy Technician license through West Virginia Board of Pharmacy
• PA: Pharmacy Intern license through Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy
• Education: Must be enrolled in or accepted to an accredited School of Pharmacy OR graduate of an approved college of pharmacy or graduate of a foreign pharmacy who has obtained Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee certificate for purposes of getting required intern hours OR qualified graduate who is awaiting examination for licensure OR individual participating in a residency or fellowship program.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
• Read physician’s orders, prepare medications, deliver medications, and order and deliver drug supplies for various patient‑care units.
• Prepare medication for dispensing, including unique dosage forms for pediatric and geriatric patient populations.
• Understand standard pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols.
• Interpret cart fill lists to replenish patient medications.
• Prepare and deliver controlled substances and maintain records.
• Take inventory and analyze medication supplies, replacing outdated medications.
• Assist in the preparation of sterile parenteral products.
• Prepare intravenous admixtures, including dilutions for pediatric patients, parenteral chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, other injectable preparations, and sterile irrigating solutions using aseptic technique.
• Enter information related to parenteral admixtures in Pharmacy IV and TPN Computer Systems.
• Label parenteral products appropriately.
• Perform general operational functions of a pharmacy intern.
• Perform arithmetic calculations for dosage determinations.
• Perform initial check for pediatric doses for appropriateness based on weight and gestational age.
• Prepare and label prepackaged medications and maintain related records.
• Maintain inventory and supplies in assigned pharmacy service areas.
• Answer the telephone and channel calls.
• Ensure pharmacy service and drug storage areas are clean and orderly.
• Participate in planning and implementing change and improving productivity through meetings, committees, etc.
• Assist in the education of pharmacy students, residents, pharmacists, and technicians.
• Prepare, process and reprocess patient’s prescriptions and adjudications.
• Follow up with third parties on rejected claims and coordinates efforts to fix the problem.
• Assist with medication management therapy and pharmaceutical adherence programs.
• Works and coordinates with unit floors in discharge patients’ prescription and costs.
Physical Requirements
• Requires pushing/pulling of carts weighing up to one hundred pounds and lifting of boxes containing twenty-five or more pounds of sterile fluids.
• Work requires standing and walking for greater than eighty per cent of work schedule.
• Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials and pharmacological agents with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
