Job Title: Payroll Clerk I

Job Summary

The Payroll Clerk I holds a crucial position within the payroll department, primarily responsible for assisting in the implementation of robust payroll and time-reporting procedures. This role demands meticulous attention to detail to ensure full compliance with all departmental and company policies, internal controls, and relevant government regulations. A core function involves guaranteeing accurate and timely payroll processing, specifically adhering to union agreements. The incumbent is expected to foster outstanding employee relations at all times and maintain a professional appearance. This role also encompasses various other duties assigned to support the efficient operation of the payroll function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensures rigorous compliance with all department and company policies, procedures, internal controls, and government regulations.
  • Assists significantly in the implementation and refinement of payroll and time-reporting procedures to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Guarantees the timely and accurate payment of employees, adhering to union agreements where applicable, and ensures the timely remittance of taxes.
  • Monitors and audits payroll data input and payroll runs meticulously to identify and rectify any discrepancies.
  • Reviews all requests for disbursement, verifying proper authenticity and complete documentation before processing.
  • Designs and develops payroll forms to streamline processes and improve data collection.
  • Actively participates in the annual payroll budgeting process, providing valuable input and support.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of related work experience in payroll or a similar administrative field.
  • Ability to obtain the appropriate license pursuant to the New York State Lottery regulations.

Required Skills & Technical Proficiencies

  • Must have ADP Workforce Now experience.
  • Proficient Excel experience required, including the ability to read and understand complex spreadsheets.
  • Excellent math aptitude is essential for accurate calculations and data analysis.
  • Strong ability to make sound decisions and formulate clear ideas.
  • Excellent communication skills to articulate ideas effectively and interact with employees.

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work long hours as needed, especially during peak payroll cycles.
  • Capacity to handle detailed work and manage multiple tasks effectively under pressure.
