Job Description: On Call Early Career Archaeology Field Technician
WSP is seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic On Call Early Career Archaeology Field Technicians (also referred to as heritage resource specialists) for project work in Arizona and New Mexico. This is an exciting opportunity to join WSP’s Earth & Environment Cultural Resource Team, contributing to a growing organization focused on solving complex cultural resource challenges for clients.
The Opportunity
- These are multiple hourly, project-based positions.
- Selected applicants will work under the guidance of supervisory field staff and senior archaeologists.
- Responsibilities include completing assigned survey and mitigation tasks, such as testing, data recovery, and monitoring.
- Compensation will be commensurate with credentials and experience, with an hourly pay rate range of $26.00 – $30.00.
- While current needs are in Arizona and New Mexico, successful candidates should be prepared for future fieldwork opportunities in adjacent states.
- Field Technicians will play an active role in conducting fieldwork, collecting digital data, and preparing digital data for reporting findings.
- Experience with various digital data collection software and hardware is expected, along with contributing to the completion of state IMACS forms.
- Great Basin and Southwestern experience is preferred but not required.
Your Impact
As an Archaeology Field Technician, you will contribute significantly to various projects by:
- Participating in Class I-Class III assessments and developing avoidance recommendations.
- Engaging in and/or contributing to heritage/cultural resource investigations.
- Ensuring project compliance with critical federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including NEPA, NHPA, and NAGPRA.
- Traveling to project sites primarily in Arizona and New Mexico. Per diem will be provided for travel.
Who You Are (Required Qualifications)
- Education: BA/BS degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, or a related field (MS/MA preferred).
- Experience: 0-1 years of professional experience in researching, analyzing, developing, and managing archaeological and historic preservation plans, staff, and resources.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills for team environments, and strong oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge:
- Working knowledge of cultural resources and environmental regulations.
- Working knowledge of North American archaeology.
- Experience with NHPA, ARPA, NAGPRA, and relevant state laws.
- Technical Skills: Experience with SharePoint and Microsoft Office suite.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform pedestrian survey.
- Ability to carry up to 25 lbs. of personal gear and company equipment.
- Ability to survey in hot and dry high-desert conditions.
- Fieldwork Proficiency: Experience identifying and analyzing a wide variety of archaeological materials from prehistoric and historic-period archaeological sites in the field.
- Availability: Must be willing to travel to remote project locations for 10-day rotations, which may include camping.
- Compliance: Must pass a background check and successfully complete WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous work experience in the western US.
- Experience with large-scale terrestrial survey projects.
- Previous Great Basin and/or Southwestern-specific fieldwork experience.
