Occupational Safety and Health Data Analyst | ERG

The Tone:
This is an entry- or mid-level, fully remote role at ERG. ERG is a research and consulting firm with multidisciplinary teams covering engineering, science, economics, public health, informational technology, and communications. This role directly supports the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) efforts to understand injury and illness trends and improve worker safety across the U.S. The work involves analyzing and classifying real-world workplace injury and illness data to contribute to real-world improvements in worker health and safety.

The TL;DR
• Role: Entry/Mid-level
• Type: Part-time (minimum 20 hours/week) or Full-time
• Location: Remote

• Team: Collaborates daily with a supportive analyst team, senior analysts for guidance, quality checks, and knowledge sharing.
• Mission: Analyze and classify real-world workplace injury and illness data to understand trends and improve worker safety across the U.S.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint), SAS, R, Power BI, Qlik

What You’ll Actually Do
• Review and Classify: Review workplace injury, illness, and fatality records and apply standardized case‑classification codes using the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Injury and Illness Classification System (OIICS).
• Analyze and Judge: Exercise thoughtful, independent judgment to accurately classify complex or ambiguous cases while maintaining speed and consistency.
• Summarize: Draft brief, clear incident narratives that summarize the circumstances of each case in plain, concise language.
• Manage: Manage multiple work queues and deadlines while maintaining high quality and attention to detail.
• Collaborate and Improve: Collaborate regularly with team members and senior analysts and contribute to documentation, process improvements, and evolving analytical practices over time.

The Must-Haves
• Background: A bachelor’s degree in communications, health/environmental science, statistics, or a related field.
• Experience: Experience or strong interest in data analysis, public health, occupational safety, epidemiology, or related fields.
• Skills: Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail, excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, outstanding time-management and organizational skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint), willingness and ability to learn new software and technical skills.
• Bonus: Experience with structured classification or coding systems (e.g., OIICS, ICD, or similar), experience or coursework in data analysis or data management, familiarity with SAS, R, Power BI, Qlik, or other analytical tools, prior exposure to occupational health, injury or illness surveillance, or public health research.
