About the Company and Job Description:

This job posting describes a Nurse Extern opportunity within the CVICU (Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit) at St. Luke’s, specifically targeting nursing students who are expected to graduate in December 2025. The externship offers a chance to transition into a Newly Licensed RN position within the same team after graduation, providing a smoother transition and reduced ambiguity.

CVICU 7T:

• A 30-bed ICU.
• Focuses on patients post-open heart surgery, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, aortic interventions (surgical and endovascular), vascular procedures, end-stage heart failure treatment, clinical work-up, left ventricular assist device implantation, and heart transplantation.
• High-acuity, fast-paced environment with numerous learning and educational opportunities for nursing students.

Key Details:

Start Date: July 28, 2025.
Hours: 8 hours per week.
Requirements: Completion of Med Surg and pharmacology courses. Unofficial transcript required at time of offer.

Major Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN):

• Assists with activities of daily living.
• Takes vital signs and monitors blood glucose levels.
• Collaborates with the RN to develop a patient care plan.
• Evaluates patient response to interventions and communicates observations.
• Develops delegation skills for Health Unit Coordinators, Nursing Assistants, and technical roles.
• Administers medications as delegated, after evaluation of clinical judgment and skill proficiency.
• Manages an increasing number of patients and utilizes time management principles.
• Collects and synthesizes patient data to identify patient status and needs.
• Participates in emergency situations, with appropriate supervision, in activities where they have demonstrated knowledge and skill.
• Performs patient positioning and transporting duties, requiring lifting and pushing/pulling, using proper technique.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, understanding growth and development principles and adapting care based on patient needs.

Requirements:

Licensure/Registration/Certification: None Required.
Education: Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program.
Experience: Nursing Assistant certification and experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Current enrollment (in final year) or graduate of an accredited nursing program.
• Successful completion of a Medical Surgical Course that includes pharmacological concepts.
• Good interpersonal skills and adaptability to interruptions and changing priorities.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

• Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders.
• Lifting requirements: up to 50 lbs from floor to waist, up to 20 lbs overhead, carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance.
• Must be able to push/pull with 30 lbs of force and perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with assistance.
• Use of foot pedals on carts or machines.
• Functional vision and hearing.
• Exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and radiation hazards, as well as blood and body fluids; protective clothing required.
• Operation of necessary equipment.
