Multicultural Watershed Public Education Intern | City of Seattle

The Tone:
This is an internship at City of Seattle, primarily located at the Cedar River Watershed Education Center near North Bend, WA. Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is a community-centered utility focused on fostering healthy people, environment, and economy through equitable management of water and waste resources. This role serves as a vital link between the Cedar River Municipal Watershed and diverse regional communities, balancing creative program development with hands-on public engagement to foster environmental stewardship and equity.

The TL;DR

• Type: Full-time (Summer) / Part-time (School Year)
• Location: In-person, North Bend, WA
• Pay: $22.56–$27.67 hourly
• Team: Reports to the Watershed Education Manager at the Cedar River Watershed Education Center
• Mission: To balance creative program development with hands-on public engagement to foster environmental stewardship and equity within diverse regional communities.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Develop: Plan and deliver thematic public education and interpretive programs that connect people to the watershed.
• Design: Assist in lesson planning and create educational materials for multicultural community engagement.
• Apply: Implement environmental justice and equity theory in community activities to ensure inclusive public outreach.
• Engage: Conduct public speaking to educate various groups about watershed management and conservation.
• Lead: Drive SPU vehicles to transport and lead community members on tours within the Cedar River Watershed.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled as an Undergraduate Junior, Community College, or Graduate Student in Education, Ethnic Studies, Environmental Science, Recreation, Communications, Social Sciences, or a related field. Must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 (undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate) throughout the internship.
• Experience: Experience in leadership, organizing groups/events, public-facing roles, or program delivery.
• Skills: Proficiency in social media.
• License: Possess a current valid driver’s license from any state at time of application; a Washington State driver’s license must be obtained by the date of hire. Must provide a Full Abstract Driving Record (not older than 30 days) as part of the application materials.
• Bonus: Fluency in a second language is highly desired.
