Mechanical Engineering Summer Technical Internship 2027 | Naval Nuclear Laboratory
The Tone:
This is a summer technical internship at Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), offering opportunities across various operating sites, with hybrid work schedules potentially available. NNL operates as a national asset, solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. The organization develops advanced nuclear propulsion technology, ensures the safety and reliability of the U.S. Navy’s nuclear reactors, and rigorously trains the Sailors who operate them. What You’ll Actually Do
• Research & Development: Research and develop new technologies and concepts for naval nuclear applications.
• System Design & Testing: Design and test software, components, or integrated systems relevant to nuclear propulsion.
• Data Analysis & Modeling: Develop scientific models and perform comprehensive data analysis to inform engineering decisions.
• Operational Support: Support existing operations and develop critical process controls and procedures for fleet activities.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Actively pursuing a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. Candidates must have successfully completed at least their first full year of college by May 2027 and maintain enrollment in a degree program throughout the entire internship duration.
• Experience: No specific years of prior work experience are required beyond meeting the academic enrollment criteria. However, prior related internship, co-op, or volunteer work experience is preferred to demonstrate practical application of engineering principles.
• Skills: Research methodology, Engineering design principles, Data analysis, System modeling, Process control development.
• Bonus: A cumulative minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0 on a 4.0 scale is preferred. Additionally, prior experience with the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD), or the Naval Nuclear Program would be advantageous.
