Mechanical Engineering Summer Technical Intern – 2027 | Naval Nuclear Laboratory
The Tone:
This is a summer technical internship at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), available at various U.S. facilities. NNL is dedicated to ensuring the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors and training the Sailors who operate them. This role offers college students the chance to gain valuable, real-world experience supporting the Navy’s nuclear fleet.
The TL;DR

• Location: On-site at an NNL facility (Potential for hybrid)
• Pay: $25–$42.5 hourly
• Mission: To contribute to critical projects that directly impact the safe and reliable operation of the Navy’s nuclear fleet.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Research: Research and develop new technologies and concepts for naval nuclear propulsion systems.
• Design: Design and test software, components, or integrated systems crucial to naval reactor operations.
• Analyze: Develop models and perform data analysis to inform engineering decisions and improvements.
• Support: Support operations by developing process controls and procedures for nuclear systems.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field from an accredited university.
• Experience: Must have completed at least their first full year of college by May 2027 and be enrolled/continuing in a degree program throughout the internship. All candidates must be U.S. citizens and able to pass a federal background investigation and drug test for access to classified matter.
• Skills: Strong foundational knowledge in engineering principles, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
• Bonus: A cumulative minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0 is preferred. Prior related internship, co-op, or work experience (paid or volunteer) is a plus, as is any Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD), or Naval Nuclear Program experience.
