Material Handler | Recology
The Tone:
This is a full-time role for a Material Handler at Recology, located in San Francisco, CA. Recology is an ecologically innovative, employee-owned resource recovery company dedicated to protecting the environment, sustaining communities, and supporting an inclusive work environment. This entry-level Material Handler position is fundamental to that mission, responsible for sorting and separating reusable materials to ensure proper recycling and contribute directly to Recology’s WASTE ZERO philosophy, helping to build a world without waste.

• Mission: Sort and separate reusable waste materials for recycling in accordance with established standards, ensuring the removal of contaminated or non-recyclable items.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Sorting: Efficiently separate and remove a wide variety of recyclable materials, including cardboard, wood, sheetrock, plastics, metal, concrete, and aluminum, from the general waste stream, then deposit them into designated bunkers.
• Safety: Actively search for, promptly report, and take appropriate action concerning any hazardous materials identified within the waste stream to maintain a safe working environment.
• Maintenance: Manage the flow of sorted materials by regularly emptying and/or changing containers as needed to ensure continuous operations.
• Compliance: Adhere strictly to all established company policies, operational procedures, and relevant state and local regulations governing waste management.
• Workplace Safety: Consistently maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area to prevent accidents and promote an efficient working environment.
The Must-Haves
• Background: An entry-level position that requires knowledge of job site safety principles, potential hazards, and applicable state and local regulations. Candidates should also understand common company procedures and the ability to follow established methods and standing instructions.
• Experience: While no specific work experience is required for this role, proficiency with basic computer programs is necessary.
• Skills:
• Understanding and applying safety rules, operating, and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Effectively communicating with peers, supervisors, and customers, including using a two-way radio or similar device.
• Maintaining high levels of activity and productivity with effectiveness and determination over extended periods.
• Demonstrating flexibility and the ability to work under pressure and handle stressful situations.
• Actively promoting the WASTE ZERO philosophy by striving to make the best and highest use of all resources.
• Bonus: A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
