Loss Prevention Clerk | Costco Wholesale

The Tone:
This is an in-person position at Costco Wholesale. Costco operates as a global membership warehouse club, dedicated to providing a wide selection of quality merchandise and services to its members at competitive prices. This Loss Prevention Clerk role is fundamental to safeguarding the company’s financial health by actively preventing and investigating theft, both internal and external. By diligently working to reduce inventory shrink and maintain a secure environment, this position directly contributes to the operational efficiency and integrity that allows Costco to serve its members effectively.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Asset Protection Strategy: Develop and implement proactive strategies to protect company assets, which includes reviewing warehouse inventory numbers and executing plans to significantly reduce overall shrink. This involves active patrolling of the warehouse and perimeter, maintaining anonymity among members, and returning merchandise to its proper location.
• Theft Investigation and Response: Systematically observe, detect, and investigate instances of internal and external theft, retrieve stolen merchandise, detain suspects when warranted, and conduct interviews. This also involves reporting potential internal theft situations directly to the warehouse manager.
• Safety and Security Monitoring: Regularly monitor the warehouse and its perimeter for potential safety and security hazards, ensuring prompt reporting and proper cleanup and disposal of hazardous materials to maintain a safe environment.
• Reporting and Legal Support: Prepare comprehensive reports for internal documentation and potential prosecution, accurately entering cases into the Nettrack system, maintaining collected evidence and report files, and providing court testimony concerning theft investigations as required.
• Operational and Member Service: Provide a high level of member service while participating in instruction and training sessions for employees on shrink reduction, communicating with external loss prevention professionals regarding local theft threats, and assisting other warehouse departments as needed.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Demonstrates a foundational understanding of various operational facets that contribute to inventory shrink and principles of loss prevention.
• Experience: No specific years of experience are mandated; however, the role requires the ability to diligently follow Costco’s established procedures and adhere to all applicable laws in performance of duties.
• Skills: Proven ability to conduct investigations, accurately prepare and manage detailed reports, maintain evidence, and effectively communicate with local law enforcement and business security personnel. Must also possess the capability to operate vehicles, equipment, or machinery and implement safety protocols, including hazardous material cleanup.
