Literacy Specialist | YES Prep Public Schools

The Tone:
This is an 11-month position at YES Prep Brays Oaks Secondary, located in Houston, TX. • Mission: Ensures students receive outstanding literacy instruction and that Emergent Bilingual and dyslexic students receive appropriate support and accommodations to achieve academic success.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Coach Teachers: Observe and coach a cohort of reading intervention teachers to ensure students receive outstanding instruction.
• Support Diverse Learners: Ensure Emergent Bilingual (EB) and dyslexic students receive appropriate accommodations in all classrooms by coaching content teachers and collaborating with leadership.
• Manage Programs: Direct the campus’s EB and dyslexia programs to ensure academic success for these students and maintain compliance with state and federal law.
• Coordinate Testing: Coordinate and direct testing for special populations, including MAP, R-CBM benchmarks, Language Assessment System (LAS), TELPAS, and dyslexia screenings.
• Provide Intervention: Deliver one-on-one or small group literacy instruction to dyslexic students needing Level-2 services and provide interventions in spoken English, writing, or handwriting for beginning EBs.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year educational institution, along with a Valid Texas Teaching Certificate, including ESL or Bilingual certification.
• Experience: 3 years of literacy teaching experience in the classroom.
• Skills: Observing and coaching instructional staff, tracking and utilizing student progress data, directing special population programs, ensuring compliance with state and federal law, and assisting in planning professional learning.
• Bonus: Master’s Degree in Dyslexia, Education, Reading, Special Education, or a related field; 2 years of teaching direct instruction; and familiarity with TELPAS, Language Assessment System (LAS Links), and MAP assessments.
