Job Title: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Position Summary

Under supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) assists the physician with duties necessary to support the needs of the practice, working within and to the maximum scope of their license.

Qualifications

Education, License & Certification

  • Must be a graduate of a licensed practical nursing program.
  • Must possess a current temporary practice permit (PA) or limited permit (NY) based on the state of practice.
  • BLS Certification is required.
  • High School Graduate or Equivalent.

Experience

  • Previous Experience In Healthcare Preferred But Not Required.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Patient Preparation & Vitals: Directs patient to exam room and prepares patient for exam or treatment by identifying height, weight, respirations, blood pressure, temperature, additional testing, and records same on chart.
  • Patient History & Medication Reconciliation: Interviews patient to obtain history, allergies, reconciles medication list, and records on chart as requested.
  • Prescription Management: Writes or calls in prescriptions after obtaining surgeon/provider authorization for all department surgeons/providers as needed, and charts as written in the patient’s chart.
  • Referral Coordination: Emails, faxes, or calls in any insurance referrals. Performs follow-up phone calls with referral numbers to specialists if requested.
  • Departmental Support: Assists in smooth departmental operation by filling in for other LPNs, clinical assistants, and Medical Office Assistants (MOAs) as requested.
  • Clerical & Communication: Answers telephone and performs other clerical functions as necessary (screens calls according to urgency and need).
  • Technology Proficiency: Must train and maintain proficiency in the use of computer equipment and other computer program training as requested.
  • Room Maintenance & Supply Management: Attends to exam and procedure rooms, including assurance that proper supplies are on hand, maintains order and cleanliness. Orders medications or clinical supplies for the department as requested.
  • Medication Administration: Administers prescribed injections/medications and records them on the patient’s chart.
  • Post-Exam Routing: Routes patient after exam to proper area for ancillary testing or follow-up appointments, i.e., blood work, x-rays, and enters lab testing as requested.
  • Medication Knowledge: Possesses basic knowledge of medications (side effects/contraindications, etc.).
  • Pathology Review: Able to read and review pathology results with patients.
  • Sterile Field Management: Sets up and tears down sterile fields.
  • Surgical Instrument Knowledge: Possesses basic knowledge of surgical instruments.
  • Surgical Tray Preparation: Prepares surgical trays as needed for procedures for the day.
  • Surgical Assistance: Assists surgeon with operative procedures both in the office and Operating Room if necessary.
  • Infection Control & Sterilization: Maintains infection control measures including but not limited to proper cleaning of surgical equipment and use of autoclave. Proficient with the autoclave sterilization process.
  • Wound Care & Suture Removal: Possesses knowledge and proficiency of dressing changes and suture removal.
  • Infection Assessment: Assesses signs and symptoms of infection and reports to surgeon and/or provider.
  • Hepatitis Protocol: Understands Hepatitis checks and protocol to protect surgeon, patient, and nurse.

Other Duties

  • Performs other duties as assigned as appropriate for LPN licensure.
  • Attends new employee orientation and all mandatory events such as in-services, classes, and training as required by the organization.
  • Complies with the dress code policy as set forth by Guthrie.
  • Attends and participates in Department meetings, along with contributing to department/office goals.
