About the Role
A4AL is currently seeking a
Legislative Intern
to join our team. This position offers a unique opportunity for individuals interested in the intricacies of legislative advocacy and how a mission-driven organization supports its government relations work from behind the scenes. The intern will gain hands-on experience in the nuts and bolts of policy advocacy, community organizing, and political campaign support.
Key Responsibilities
As a Legislative Intern, you will play a crucial role in supporting A4AL’s advocacy efforts. Your responsibilities will include:
- Meeting with congressional staffers to advocate for A4AL’s mission and policy positions.
- Supporting local organizing efforts within the community or on campus in alignment with the Alliance’s goals.
- Drafting compelling letters to the editor to influence public opinion and policy discourse.
- Conducting legislative research to inform A4AL’s advocacy strategies.
- Providing direct support to endorsed political campaigns through field organizing activities.
- Taking notes during virtual briefings or committee hearings to capture key information.
- Formatting and proofreading memos to ensure clarity and professionalism.
- Coordinating internal document storage to maintain consistency and accessibility of information.
- Providing general administrative support as needed.
Qualifications
We are looking for motivated individuals who possess the following qualities:
- Reliable: Demonstrates consistent dependability in completing tasks and commitments.
- Detail-Oriented: Pays close attention to small details to ensure accuracy and thoroughness.
- Organized: Capable of managing multiple tasks, prioritizing, and maintaining structured workflows.
- Strong Written Communication Skills: Able to articulate ideas clearly and concisely in written form.
- An interest in Congress, foreign policy, or nonprofit advocacy is helpful, but no prior policy experience is required.
Position Details
- Location: This is a fully remote position.
- Compensation: This is a volunteer position.
- Hours: Flexible hours to accommodate your schedule.
- In-Person Opportunities: Interns based in the Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia (DMV) area may be asked to assist with in-person events such as Hill Days or advocacy meetings on an as-needed basis.
