Neighborhood Legal Services (NLS) is currently accepting applications for its Summer 2026 Legal Internship program, a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in public interest law.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

The Legal Intern will perform a wide range of duties, including, but not limited to:

  • Assisting Staff Attorneys with the preparation of legal documents for trials, hearings, and depositions.
  • Attending trials, hearings, depositions, and related legal events.
  • Providing critical legal research and feedback to attorneys for various cases, studies, or assigned tasks.
  • Proofreading and offering content suggestions for legal documentation.
  • Providing general legal support to program attorneys, along with other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Demonstrating cultural competency to effectively work with clients from diverse backgrounds, including those of every race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and limited English proficiency.

Qualifications

To be considered for this internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited law school.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and vision of NLS.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to write and present information in a polished and professional manner.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent legal research skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Passion for issues affecting individuals with disabilities (preferred).

Opportunity for Student Practice Orders

NLS typically applies for Student Practice Orders for eligible law students who have completed a minimum of two (2) semesters of law school. This order enables qualified students to:

  • Appear in court under the direct supervision of an NLS attorney.
  • Gain invaluable courtroom experience.
  • Directly advocate on behalf of our clients.

Compensation & Work Schedule

  • Hourly Pay: $20 /Hr
  • Work Week: 35 hours per week
