Accountant – Lease | Michaels Stores

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Michaels Stores, located in Irving, TX. Michaels is the leading destination for creating and celebrating in North America, operating over 1,300 stores across 49 states and Canada and online. This position is crucial for ensuring the integrity and accuracy of all accounting related to lease agreements. The Lease Accountant plays a key role in maintaining adherence to existing financial controls, policies, and procedures, thereby supporting accurate financial statements and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.

• Mission: Supports the integrity and accuracy of all accounting related to lease agreements, ensuring Sarbanes-Oxley compliance and accurate financial statements.
• Tech Stack: Excel, Oracle Financials (preferred)

What You’ll Actually Do
• Lease Accounting: Account for lease agreements, ensuring compliance with ASC 842, including recording new leases and handling lease modifications or renewals.
• Expense Tracking: Track, compile, and accrue triple-net expenses for all US and Canada stores.
• Financial Analysis: Reconcile and analyze various general ledger account balances and recommend appropriate actions to be taken by management.
• Audit Support: Support internal and external audits during quarterly and annual reviews by providing requested documentation and analysis.
• Month-End Close: Assist with the company’s month-end closing process by booking journal entries and creating variance reports within strict deadlines.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Accounting. This is an early-career role.
• Experience: 0 to 2 years of accounting experience with exposure to U.S. GAAP and SOX.
• Skills: Proficient in Excel.
• Bonus: CPA or CMA preferred, prior lease accounting experience, and experience with Oracle Financials or other large ERP desired.
