Juvenile Court Officer 1 | State of Iowa – Executive Branch

This is an entry-level, full-time role at the State of Iowa – Executive Branch, specifically within the Iowa Judicial Branch’s Juvenile Court Services in Johnson County. The Iowa Judicial Branch is a public service organization that oversees the state’s legal system. This position is crucial for providing essential services to youth charged with delinquent offenses, aiming to prevent and reduce delinquent behaviors within Iowa communities through supervision, investigation, and inter-agency collaboration.

• Team: Juvenile Court Services, reporting under immediate supervision
• Mission: To learn, train, and complete the necessary requirements to become a Juvenile Court Officer providing broad services for youth in the Iowa Judicial Branch.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Supervise: Oversee youth on informal and formal probation, guiding their behavior and ensuring compliance with court directives.
• Investigate: Conduct social history investigations and develop recommendations to the Court for community supervision or out-of-home placement.
• Collaborate: Work closely with law enforcement, schools, courts, communities, and other agencies to prevent and reduce delinquent behaviors in at-risk youth.
• Train: Participate in the Iowa Judicial Branch Juvenile Court Officer Academy, classes, and on-the-job training to learn casework standards and legal compliance.
• Document: Learn and navigate court record-specific computer programs, maintaining the accuracy and integrity of confidential records.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in law, criminal justice, criminology, psychology, sociology, education, or a related social science for an entry-level position.
• Experience: No specific years of experience are required for minimum qualification.
• Skills: Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; problem-solving abilities; the capacity to maintain and secure confidential information; and reliable transportation with the ability to travel.
• Bonus: Two or more years’ experience working with at-risk youth, familiarity with evidence-based practices, prior experience securing confidential information, experience testifying in court, experience writing professional reports, or experience within the Court/Human Services profession.
