What You’ll Actually Do
• Document Processing: Receive, examine, and process legal documents for accuracy, legal conformity, and validity, including certification and issuance.
• Courtroom Clerk: Attend court sessions to record minutes, administer oaths to witnesses and jurors, participate in proceedings by reading charges, and announcing verdicts.
• Evidence Management: Secure, record, mark, and maintain custody of exhibits and evidence, including sensitive materials, during court proceedings.
• Legal Order Preparation: Prepare and issue legal orders, such as warrants, writs, subpoenas, abstracts, judgments, and dismissals, under judicial discretion.
• Public Assistance: Provide complex procedural information and assistance to the public, attorneys, and justice partners regarding case status, legal filings, and court rules without offering legal advice.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Graduation from High School or G.E.D. equivalent, with knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, legal forms, and terminology across all court divisions.
• Experience: Minimum of two years full-time clerical experience in a Court or legal office, preparing or processing legal documents. Up to one year of business training can substitute for a maximum of one year of experience. Must possess a valid typing certificate, dated within 12 months, demonstrating 35 net words per minute or higher over a 5-minute test.
• Skills: Ability to type accurately at a minimum of 35 words per minute, strong oral and written communication skills, proficiency in cash handling and basic arithmetic, knowledge of office organization and record-keeping principles, and effective customer service.
• Other: A valid California Class C driver’s license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when required for job functions.
