Job Description

Classification Title: OPS/Student Assistant

The Junior Staff (Camp Counselors) play a pivotal role in supporting the overall operations and enhancing the experience of the Summer Pre-Medical Professions Program. In this position, you will work closely with high school students who are exploring future careers in medicine. This role offers invaluable hands-on experience in leadership, mentoring, student engagement, and program facilitation within an academic setting, all while directly contributing to the success of a dynamic summer program.

About This Role:

Supervision

  • Provide daily oversight of camp participants, ensuring their safety and compliance with University standards.
  • Monitor and guide student behavior while fostering a positive, inclusive, and encouraging environment.
  • Help lead group activities, actively encouraging full student engagement and participation.
  • Serve as a primary liaison between students and senior staff, addressing issues, questions, or concerns promptly and effectively.

Administrative

  • Assist with the setup and organization of program materials, including creating handouts, distributing schedules, and preparing essential resources for various activities.
  • Accurately track student attendance, participation levels, and progress throughout the duration of the program.
  • Support the efficient collection and maintenance of student feedback, evaluations, and other necessary documentation.
  • Complete daily administrative tasks such as filing, organizing program supplies, and maintaining an orderly and functional workspace.

Leadership

  • Lead small-group or individual activities, expertly facilitating discussions, workshops, and hands-on learning experiences.
  • Actively encourage and maintain enthusiasm and engagement among participants throughout the entire program.
  • Demonstrate strong initiative in organizing and supporting a wide range of program activities.
  • Collaborate effectively with senior staff to ensure the smooth coordination and seamless execution of the program schedule.
  • Help students develop crucial confidence, interpersonal skills, and professional behaviors essential for their future.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for program participants, offering valuable guidance on academic and pre-medical professional development.

Facilitation

  • Assist in arranging and actively participating in experiential learning opportunities such as shadowing experiences, simulations, and skill stations.
  • Encourage active participation and facilitate insightful discussions directly tied to program learning outcomes.
  • Act as a liaison between students and facilitators, helping to ensure clear communication and positive group dynamics.
  • Provide informal academic support and accurately answer questions related to the curriculum and various medical career pathways.
  • Foster a supportive, encouraging environment by creating ample opportunities for students to ask questions and receive advice on their aspirations and challenges.

Expected Salary:

$15.00 per hour

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate(s) must possess the following:

  • Be a current MD student.
  • Have a strong interest in medicine, pre-medical studies, or related health professions.
  • Have experience in leadership, mentorship, or educational support roles.
  • Possess strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Have the ability to work effectively with diverse students, staff, and guest speakers.
  • Have the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
