Investigator 1 | State of Iowa – Executive Branch
The Tone:
The Iowa Department of Revenue is a well-respected state government employer. This is a full-time role located within the State of Iowa, with opportunities for remote work from a primary residence within the state, alongside significant in-state travel. The Department’s Alcohol & Tax Compliance Division oversees critical functions including tax processing, business permits, and alcohol regulation statewide. This Investigator 1 position plays a vital role in upholding and enforcing Iowa’s laws and regulations by conducting compliance inspections and investigations related to alcoholic beverage and tobacco establishments.
The TL;DR

• Team: Alcohol Regulation team, within the Alcohol & Tax Compliance Division
• Mission: Uphold, enforce, and educate taxpayers and licensees on Iowa’s alcohol and tobacco laws and regulations.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Investigate: Perform a variety of general entry-level investigative activities of limited complexity within the Alcohol Regulation Bureau.
• Inspect: Conduct alcohol and tobacco compliance inspections and prepare reports to document the outcomes of each inspection.
• Travel: Travel throughout the State up to 80% of the time with varied hours, including evenings and weekends, to conduct inspections.
• Respond: Assist in the investigation of complaints alleging violations of alcoholic beverage and tobacco statutes, rules, and regulations from the public, industry members, and government agencies.
• Examine: Perform entry-level financial-based examinations of licensees/permittees, including site visits, desk examinations, and interviews, on an as-needed basis.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in law enforcement, corrections, criminology, police science, accounting, finance, or law. Alternatively, a four-year degree combined with one year of full-time professional experience requiring knowledge in law enforcement, corrections, or general/criminal investigation.
• Experience: This role involves significant travel throughout the State of Iowa, up to 80% of the time, often during evenings and weekends, to conduct inspections.
• Skills: Critical thinking to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, complex problem solving to develop and evaluate options, and active learning to understand new information implications.
• Bonus: Professional experience in conducting investigations and writing clear, comprehensive reports that ultimately arrive at a conclusion or recommendation. Current or previous work utilizing investigative techniques. Professional experience working independently, off-site, and without direct supervision. Professional experience interacting positively with a diverse population and dealing with customers.
