Internal Audit Intern – Summer 2027 | National Life Group

The Tone:
This is an Internal Audit Intern position at National Life Group, located in Montpelier, VT, with an onsite work schedule of four days per week. • Team: NLG Internal Audit team, part of a diverse group of accounting, audit, IT, and life insurance professionals.
• Mission: Gain a foundational understanding of the audit process and contribute insights to strengthen company processes, decision-making, and strategic objectives.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Audit Planning: Support audit planning activities by reviewing business processes and financial or operational information, identifying key risks and controls.
• Risk Assessment & Testing: Conduct risk assessment and testing by examining supporting documentation, accurately documenting procedures and results, and escalating potential inconsistencies or issues.
• Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with Internal Audit team members and business partners to gather information, understand processes, ask thoughtful questions, and communicate status updates.
• Professional Reporting: Prepare clear, organized audit summaries that are accurate, complete, timely, and handled in accordance with confidentiality and professional standards.
• Continuous Learning: Plan and prioritize assigned work, meet established deadlines, follow through on commitments, and build knowledge of audit concepts and NLG business processes through training and hands-on experience.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Currently an undergraduate student seeking real workplace learning within internal audit, accounting, IT, or life insurance.
• Experience: No specific years required; foundational understanding will be gained through academic study, training, feedback, and hands-on experience during the program.
• Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, high motivation and self-direction, ability to work independently within established timeframes, strategic thinking and tactical responsiveness, well-organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities, strong written and verbal communication skills, and intellectual curiosity.
