Intern Summer – R&D Graduate | Sandia National Laboratories

What You’ll Actually Do
• Reporting: Document research outcomes, contributing to technical reports, presentations, and summaries.
• Modeling: Develop and validate numerical models for energy power conversion and microgrid systems using MATLAB/Simulink.
• Simulation: Conduct simulation studies of power electronics converters, coordinated control strategies, and energy integration applications.
• Analysis: Analyze simulation and experimental data to evaluate system performance, stability, and efficiency under varying operating conditions.
• Testing: Participate in Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) experiments for grid integration and microgrid-scale validation of marine energy systems.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Earned bachelor’s degree; currently enrolled full-time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program, or scheduled to graduate in the spring term immediately preceding the internship.
• Experience: Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0; ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer.
• Skills: Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
• Bonus: Proficiency in Matlab, Simulink, and Python; familiarity with design optimization and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) tests; experience developing numerical models for energy systems; computer science or cybersecurity training.
