Business Compliance and Regulation Internship – Fall 2026 | State of Michigan

The Tone:
This is an internship at State of Michigan, located in Lansing, MI. The Michigan Department of State (MDOS) is the state’s oldest and most public-facing department, responsible for administering driver and vehicle laws, providing consumer protection, and overseeing elections. This role contributes to the department’s mission of ensuring customer-service excellence, innovation, integrity, and transparency in state operations. The intern’s work directly supports the vital functions of regulatory compliance and consumer protection that sustain public trust and the efficient functioning of democracy.

The TL;DR

• Team: Business Compliance and Regulation Division
• Mission: Ensure thoroughness and compliance in regulatory cases for various businesses and processes through document and data review.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Document Review: Review various documents to support regulatory and compliance cases.
• Document Compilation: Assist in compiling and constructing documents to ensure thoroughness for administrative and legal processes.
• Case Analysis: Help review diverse regulatory and compliance cases involving dealers, mechanics, repair facilities, and driver education businesses.
• Data Management: Analyze and review data within the Customer and Automotive Records System (CARS) and assist with data tracking.
• Quality Control: Support quality control efforts, including document scanning and other projects as assigned by the division.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled in college/post-secondary education, with preferred education in Political Science, Pre-Law, Public Administration, Management, Criminal Justice, Data Science, Quality Control, Procedural/Workflow Development, Policy Involvement, or General Business. Career level: Student.
• Experience: Demonstrated interest in regulatory and compliance, law, and legislation.
• Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills, highly organized, self-directed, resourceful, team-oriented, flexible, and mission-driven approach to all tasks.
