Integrated Ceramic Photonics Summer Intern | Coherent Corp.

The Tone:
This is an internship at Coherent Corp., located in Budd Lake, NJ. Coherent is a global leader in lasers, engineered materials, and networking components, developing innovative products for diversified applications across industrial, optical communications, military, life sciences, semiconductor equipment, and consumer markets. This role is within the CTO Office’s Advanced Photonics Group, dedicated to advancing the state of the art in highly integrated ceramic optical circuits. The intern will gain hands-on experience and contribute significantly to meaningful projects supporting high-speed optical data links.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Device Development: Contribute to the design, simulation, assembly, and characterization of integrated ceramic photonic devices, focusing on critical functions like optical isolation and amplification for high-speed optic fiber links.
• Component Engineering: Execute the design, simulation, fabrication, and testing of integrated ceramic optoelectronic components using industry-standard CAD tools such as Cadence and Lumerical FDTD.
• Optical System Characterization: Assemble and configure optical test benches to precisely characterize the performance of integrated ceramic photonic devices.
• Data Analysis and Reporting: Perform comprehensive data collection and compilation, leveraging tools like Python/ML, MATLAB, and ChatGPT, to derive insights and support project goals.
• Team Collaboration and Presentation: Work closely with a mentor and team members, participate in weekly progress reviews, and deliver regular reports leading to a comprehensive final presentation.

The Must-Haves
• Background: PhD candidate in Material Science, Electrical Engineering, or Applied Physics, with at least two years of doctoral study completed by the internship start date.
• Experience: Proven research experience involving the implementation of thin-film ceramic and garnet optoelectronics devices, along with hands-on experience using electrical and optical metrology equipment to characterize these components.
• Skills: Proficiency in CAD tools including MATLAB, Python, Lumerical, and FDTD; strong organizational skills; and excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
• Bonus: Relevant coursework or extracurricular experience in semiconductor physics, EM theory, fundamental optics, and practical design and fabrication of ceramic optics or integrated optoelectronic devices. Familiarity with integration processes and fabrication tools like sputter and deposition systems on advanced silicon and InP platforms is also a significant advantage.
