Human Resources Generalist | Marin Primary & Middle School

The Tone:
This is a part-time role at Marin Primary & Middle School, located in Larkspur, CA. The company is an independent, coeducational preschool through eighth grade dedicated to inspiring joyful learning and empowering students. This role is crucial for providing day-to-day support across key human resources functions, ensuring compliance with federal and state requirements, and supporting the overall employee experience for the school’s community.

The TL;DR
• Role: Part-time (32 hours/week)

• Location: In-person, Larkspur, CA
• Pay: $30–$35 hourly
• Team: Reports to the Chief Financial & Operating Officer; collaborates with the CFOO and the school’s outside HR consulting team.
• Mission: This person supports Human Resources, Payroll, and Benefits Administration to ensure compliance and a consistent, effective employee experience.
• Tech Stack: Ease, Employee Navigator, Paylocity, Microsoft Excel

What You’ll Actually Do
• Payroll & Benefits Administration: Administer employee payroll and comprehensive benefits programs, including reconciliation of health and retirement benefits, and resolving discrepancies with insurance and payroll vendors.
• Employee Lifecycle Management: Oversee the entire employee lifecycle, from supporting the hiring process and conducting thorough onboarding (including required paperwork like fingerprinting, TB assessments, I-9, and payroll enrollment) to managing offboarding processes (exit interviews, technology return, COBRA enrollment, benefit termination).
• Policy & Compliance: Develop and enforce HR policies and procedures, serving as the primary point of contact for initial employee HR inquiries, and ensuring compliance with federal and state requirements.
• HRIS & Data Management: Maintain accurate employee records within HRIS software, payroll systems, and physical/digital files, along with managing training compliance tracking and filing.
• Compensation & Analytics Support: Support the CFOO in the development and implementation of compensation policies, the creation of long-term compensation programs, and provide reports and analyses on key HR metrics, including benchmarking current compensation plans.

The Must-Haves
• Background: A Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field is required, providing a strong foundation in HR principles, practices, and compliance standards essential for the role.
• Experience: A minimum of 3 years of dedicated Human Resources experience is necessary, coupled with demonstrated experience in managing payroll systems and administering employee benefits programs.
• Skills: Proficiency with HRIS/payroll and benefits platforms such as Ease, Employee Navigator, and Paylocity (or similar systems) is critical, alongside strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel for general data management. The role demands excellent verbal and written communication skills, an approachable professional presence, and the unwavering ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion at all times.
• Bonus: Familiarity with California employment law is preferred, enhancing the ability to ensure local compliance.
