This program offers high school students a valuable opportunity to learn about city government operations and contribute to essential departmental projects that serve the community.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Support City departments by working alongside staff on ongoing projects for a fixed period between June 15 and July 13, 2026.
• Contribute to project-based assignments, culminating in a presentation to staff and other interns at the end of the internship.
• Assist with administrative tasks, data organization, research, and outreach initiatives within your assigned department.
• Gain insight into government processes and best practices while learning about the functions of a specific City department.
• Develop communication, organizational, and technical skills through hands-on experience in public service.
The Must-Haves
• Background: High school student with a demonstrated interest in public service, city government, or specific departmental fields such as economic development, legal, communications, social services, finance, emergency services, human resources, information technology, law enforcement, public power utilities, or housing policy. Must be a City of Alameda resident or attend a school in Alameda, and be at least 16 years old.
• Experience: Prior volunteer or work experience is encouraged and will be reviewed as part of the application process.
• Skills: Ability to obtain a valid school work permit; strong organizational skills; attention to detail for administrative tasks, data entry, and research; basic computational skills; and/or proficiency in digital content creation (social media, video) or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, depending on the assigned department.
