Job Summary

The Graduate Registered Nurse (RN) provides fundamental nursing care under the direct supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) within an acute care environment. This position is specifically tailored for recently graduated nurses embarking on their transition into professional nursing practice. The Graduate RN is responsible for delivering patient care, administering treatments, and assisting with patient education to foster recovery, ensure safety, and enhance overall well-being.

Essential Functions

  • Patient Care Plan Development and Implementation: Actively participates in the creation and execution of individualized patient care plans, working in collaboration with experienced RNs and the broader healthcare team.
  • Medication and Treatment Administration: Accurately and safely administers medications and treatments as prescribed by physicians, ensuring strict adherence to established protocols and safety guidelines.
  • Patient Assessment and Documentation: Conducts comprehensive patient assessments, meticulously documenting vital signs, patient responses, and any observed changes in condition promptly within the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Patient and Family Education: Provides essential education to patients and their families regarding basic care, procedures, and treatment plans, thereby promoting understanding and encouraging adherence.
  • Support for Daily Living Activities: Assists patients with mobility, personal hygiene, and other daily living activities, while consistently maintaining a clean, organized, and safe patient environment.
  • Effective Communication: Communicates clearly and effectively with patients, their families, and all members of the healthcare team, specifically reporting any significant changes in patient conditions to supervising RNs.
  • Adherence to Safety and Policy: Strictly adheres to all infection control protocols, patient safety guidelines, and hospital policies to ensure a consistently safe care environment.
  • Other Assigned Duties: Performs additional duties as assigned to support the overall functioning of the nursing unit and patient care.
  • Attendance and Compliance: Maintains regular and reliable attendance and complies with all established policies and standards of the institution.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 0-2 years of experience in a clinical nursing role or participation in student clinical rotations within an acute care setting is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Nursing Process Expertise: Possesses a strong understanding of the nursing process and fundamental clinical nursing practices.
  • Assessment and Communication Skills: Demonstrates the ability to perform thorough patient assessments and communicate findings effectively and clearly.
  • Medication Administration Proficiency: Proficient in administering medications and vigilant in monitoring for potential side effects.
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Exhibits effective communication and interpersonal skills essential for collaborative work with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Organizational and Documentation Skills: Demonstrates strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail in documenting all aspects of patient care.
  • Safety and Quality Knowledge: Knowledgeable in safety standards, infection control practices, and quality improvement initiatives.

Licenses and Certifications

  • RN – Registered Nurse: State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure is required.
  • BCLS – Basic Life Support: Required.
  • ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support: Preferred.
  • PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support: Preferred.
  • NRP – Neonatal Resuscitation: Preferred.
