Firefighter/EMT | City of Walla Walla Fire Department

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at City of Walla Walla Fire Department, located in Walla Walla, WA. The department is dedicated to protecting life and property within the Walla Walla community. This position is vital for providing immediate emergency services, including fire suppression, emergency medical aid, and fire prevention. The Firefighter/EMT will uphold the department’s core values of integrity, ownership, professionalism, and compassion while ensuring public safety.

• Mission: Protect life and property through fire suppression, fire prevention, and emergency medical aid for the Walla Walla community.
• Tech Stack: Specialized fire apparatus, vehicles, ambulances; pumps, hoses, hydraulic equipment; self-contained breathing apparatus; specialized rescue tools.

What You’ll Actually Do
Emergency Response: Actively participate in all aspects of fire suppression, tackling structural, automotive, chemical, aircraft, and wild land fires, and expertly operate pumps, aerial ladders, and other auxiliary fire apparatus to combat fires, perform salvage, overhaul, and investigate causes.
Medical Aid: Drive ambulances and provide essential emergency medical aid, performing medical triage of patients and delivering appropriate treatment in emergency situations consistent with established protocols and certification levels, preparing detailed medical incident reports.
Rescue Operations: Conduct critical rescue services, including low to high angle, swift water, confined space, and trench rescue activities, while diligently searching for victims in hazardous environments and responding to hazardous material incidents.
Fire Prevention & Education: Perform comprehensive fire prevention inspections of commercial and residential buildings, identify and seek abatement of fire hazards through education and enforcement, test fire hydrants, and deliver educational programs on safety and fire prevention to the public and schools.
Equipment & Training: Execute general maintenance and light to medium repairs for firefighting equipment, apparatus, buildings, and grounds, participate in continuous training for fire suppression, emergency medical aid, hazardous materials operations, and maintain physical fitness for emergency readiness.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Early Career, High school graduate or equivalent, U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, and a non-user of tobacco products on and off the job.
• Experience: Must be a minimum of 21 years of age by time of hire, possess a valid State driver’s license with a good driving record, and obtain an Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention (EVIP) certificate within 3 months of hire. Ability to obtain Washington State EMT certification within 3 months of hire date.
• Skills: Demonstrate technical expertise in the operation, use, and maintenance of specialized fire apparatus, vehicles, and ambulances, including pump and hydraulic systems. Possess a strong working knowledge of fire science principles, covering techniques, methods, materials, and equipment for fire prevention, suppression, and emergency medical services. Exhibit proficient oral and written communication skills for effective record-keeping, report writing, and public interaction.
• Bonus: Bilingual in Spanish, or one year of paid/volunteer firefighting experience or IFSAC Firefighter I certification.
