Editorial Assistant, MCPG | Macmillan

The Tone:
This is a full-time, remote role at Macmillan, a leading U.S. trade publishing company that is part of the large family-owned Holtzbrinck Publishing Group, headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany. The position is tied to the New York, NY office. This entry-level Editorial Assistant role is critical for a new imprint within Macmillan Children’s Publishing, where you will provide essential administrative support to the publishing director and executive editor. Your work will directly enable the efficient operation of the imprint, which is dedicated to publishing a diverse range of children’s and young adult books, including picture books, graphic novels, and nonfiction.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Office Administration: Manage comprehensive administrative tasks for the publishing director and executive editor, including calendar maintenance, scheduling meetings, managing imprint resources, and internal departmental liaison.
• Publishing Workflow Coordination: Oversee the preparation and trafficking of all publishing-related forms and requests, from metadata input and contract requests to monitoring book production schedules and due dates.
• Content Development & Review: Draft compelling copy for sales materials, book jackets, online platforms, and metadata, while also logging, reading, and evaluating book submissions.
• Editorial Assistance: Provide direct editorial support through reading, proofreading, and line editing manuscripts, maintaining professional and responsive communication with authors and agents.
• Presentation & Social Media: Prepare and organize materials for internal and external meetings and presentations, and contribute posts to help manage the new imprint’s social media presence.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience; demonstrated interest in the children’s book market.
• Experience: Entry-level experience with a demonstrated interest in the children’s book market.
• Skills: Attention to detail and excellent follow through on tasks; excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to prioritize, adapt to shifting priorities, and work independently; proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace programs.
• Bonus: Proofreading or copy editing experience; previous book publishing experience/internships; previous media or entertainment experience/internships.
