Entry Assistant City Attorney | City and County of Denver
The Tone:
This is an unlimited full-time role with the City and County of Denver, situated in the heart of Denver, CO. As an integral part of the City Attorney’s Office, the Prosecution and Code Enforcement (PACE) Section is dedicated to upholding public safety and justice. This position plays a crucial role in prosecuting municipal ordinance violations, supporting crime victims through the justice system, and collaborating with neighborhood organizations to resolve disputes, ultimately contributing to a safer and more thriving Denver community.

• Mission: Prosecute municipal ordinance violations and provide legal support to keep the Denver community safe and address criminal activity.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Case Evaluation and Prosecution: Evaluate and prepare cases for all stages of criminal prosecution, covering municipal crimes such as domestic violence, assault, shoplifting, trespassing, traffic violations, and civil nuisance abatement.
• Collaborative Case Management: Work collaboratively with paralegals and victim advocates to ensure cases are thoroughly prepared and all decisions are victim-centric.
• Legal Documentation and Appeals: Draft appropriate motions and respond to motions in a professional and timely manner, also drafting and responding to appeals as required.
• Agency Counsel and Representation: Provide legal advice to City agencies, represent them during administrative hearings, and interpret relevant policy, ordinances, and charter requirements.
• Policy Development and Support: Assist other attorneys with legal research and related activities, provide formal legal opinions to agencies, and draft proposed ordinances to shape municipal law.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Doctorate Degree (Doctor of Jurisprudence or Bachelor of Law Degree) defining an entry-level role within municipal prosecution and code enforcement.
• Experience: No specific prior legal experience is required; however, candidates must possess a license to practice law in Colorado from the Colorado Supreme Court by the date of hire, or have a reasonable expectation of becoming licensed.
• Skills: Strong oral and written communication capabilities essential for legal drafting, advocacy, and inter-agency collaboration.
• Bonus: Significant experience handling criminal matters, substantial experience in all phases of criminal litigation, and a history of success working in a busy criminal litigation practice. Experience with domestic violence cases or victims is also preferred, along with a willingness to work in a paperless environment.
