Education – Interpretation and Educational Content | Whitney Museum of American Art

The Tone:
This is an internship at the Whitney Museum of American Art, located in New York, NY, with a hybrid work model. The Whitney is a renowned institution, founded in 1930, that collects, preserves, interprets, and exhibits American art from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This role is crucial for ensuring audiences have the necessary context to understand, find meaningful, and engage deeply with the art on display.

• Mission: Ensure audiences have the context they need to understand the art on view, and to find it meaningful and engaging.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Prepare: Help with the preparation and production of content for upcoming exhibition multimedia guides and extended object labels.
• Research: Conduct research on current and upcoming exhibitions, as well as the Whitney Education department’s history and other projects.
• Archive: Assist with the archiving of exhibition files, interpretive materials, audio stops, and digital content assets for onsite and online access.
• Produce: Assist with the production of audio and video content, including arranging and conducting interviews with exhibiting artists.
• Evaluate: Participate in in-gallery observations and evaluations of interpretive materials, visitor engagement with tours, and discussions.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student with some art history background.
• Experience: No specific years required; ideally has experience with digital equipment such as audio recorders and digital cameras.
• Skills: Attention to detail; strong interest and skill level in research; strong skill level in writing.
• Bonus: Ideally has familiarity with WordPress or similar platforms, Excel, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite.
