Youth Guidance: Direct Service Clinical Internships
Position Summary:
Youth Guidance Direct Service Internships offer a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience specifically designed to fulfill academic requirements for “Internship,” “Practicum,” “Capstone,” and similar courses. These programs emphasize onsite learning, providing interns with regular supervision and invaluable direct, face-to-face client interaction.
Our internships are meticulously structured to meet the rigorous requirements of most Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, and related degree programs. As a clinical intern with Youth Guidance, you will:
- Participate in weekly supervision sessions, fostering professional growth and providing guidance on case management and therapeutic techniques.
- Engage in monthly team meetings, collaborating with experienced professionals and contributing to a supportive community of practice.
- Have the opportunity to run individual and group counseling sessions, with the level of responsibility tailored to your developing proficiency and skill level, ensuring a challenging yet supported learning environment.
While the majority of Youth Guidance programs are conducted in school-based settings, offering a unique insight into the educational system and its impact on youth mental health, our internships may also encompass virtual and/or community-based service provision, providing a diverse range of experiences.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Client Session Engagement: Actively observe, co-facilitate, or independently facilitate group and individual counseling sessions within various school settings. The extent of involvement will be carefully determined based on the intern’s demonstrated skill level, readiness, and academic program requirements.
- Comprehensive Assessments: Conduct thorough assessments on youth actively engaged in Youth Guidance programs, contributing to individualized care plans and program evaluation.
- Crisis & Family Support: Provide critical family and crisis intervention services as needed, demonstrating responsiveness and effective de-escalation techniques in high-pressure situations.
- Documentation & Administration: Accurately complete all weekly required documentation, including progress notes, service logs, and other administrative assignments crucial for compliance and client record-keeping.
- Professional Development: Actively participate in ongoing program staff development initiatives and all mandatory training sessions, ensuring continuous learning and adherence to best practices.
- Committee Participation: Engage in Youth Guidance committees, which may be either a required component of the internship or an optional opportunity based on departmental needs and intern interest, fostering broader organizational involvement.
- Other Assigned Duties: Perform additional duties as assigned, contributing to the overall mission and operational needs of Youth Guidance programs.
