Deckhand | Kirby

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Kirby, operating on inland pushboats and barges across various waterways. Kirby is a leading company in the inland marine transportation of liquid products and is committed to safe and efficient operations. The Deckhand plays a crucial role in maintaining these high standards, performing essential general maintenance, handling lines, and observing product transfers. This position directly supports the vessel master in ensuring both the vessel’s integrity and the safety of all onboard operations.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Safety Operations: Support the vessel master in maintaining safe and efficient operations of Kirby’s boats and barges, adhering to all safety rules and instructions.
• Vessel Connections: Attach and remove lines and cables to and from the vessel, barges, docks, and locks, making adjustments for changing heights during product transfer.
• Routine Maintenance: Perform scheduled maintenance and housekeeping tasks on the vessel, including sweeping, washing, chipping rusted metal, priming, and painting.
• Equipment Repair: Execute minor repairs using various tools such as hammers, fire axes, ratchets, hand winches, stripping pumps, needle guns, and grinders.
• Crew Support: Assist with additional duties as assigned by the vessel master, which may include cooking, cleaning, and washing clothes.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Early Career; High School Diploma or GED preferred. Must satisfy all United States Coast Guard physical requirements (CG-719K) and Chemical Drug Testing Programs for Vessel Personnel, as found in 46 CFR Part 10. Compliance with company requirements of 46 CFR Part 197 Subpart C Benzene is also mandatory. Must be 18 years of age and cannot have any criminal charges pending or be on probation.
• Experience: 12 months of consecutive work experience is preferred. A valid TWIC card must be held prior to applying. Requires a valid driver’s license with no DWI or DUI in the last three years and no more than two moving driving violations in the last three years.
• Skills: Basic computer skills knowledge required. Must be able to read and write English, and possess the ability to understand written and verbal orders. Ability to detect the presence of potentially dangerous vapors (sense of smell) is essential. Must be able to meet standards of the Criteria Skill Assessment (online).
