Deckhand | Kirby

The Tone:
This is a full-time role with Kirby, operating on inland waterways from company-defined hub cities. Kirby is a leading operator of inland pushboats and accompanying barges, facilitating the crucial transfer of products. This role is vital for ensuring the safe, efficient, and well-maintained operation of vessels and barges, directly contributing to the smooth flow of goods.

• Team: Reports directly to the Vessel Master
• Mission: Monitor the transfer of products on barges to ensure safe and efficient operations.
• Tech Stack: Hammers, fire axes, ratchets, hand winches, stripping pumps, needle guns, grinders

What You’ll Actually Do
• Safety: Assist the vessel master in maintaining a safe and efficient operational environment for Kirby’s boats and barges.
• Line Handling: Attach and remove lines and cables to and from the vessel, barges, docks, and locks, adjusting for varying heights during operations.
• Maintenance: Perform scheduled vessel maintenance and housekeeping tasks, including sweeping, washing, chipping, priming, and painting.
• Repairs: Conduct minor repairs using various tools.
• General Support: Carry out other duties as assigned by the vessel master, which may include cooking, cleaning, and washing clothes.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Early career professional, at least 18 years of age, holding a valid TWIC card, valid driver’s license, valid state-issued birth certificate, and a valid social security card. Must satisfy all United States Coast Guard physical and chemical drug testing programs and company requirements for Benzene.
• Experience: Basic computer skills knowledge is required.
• Skills: Fluent in reading and writing English, with the ability to clearly understand both written and verbal orders. Must be able to meet the standards of the company’s Criteria Skill Assessment (online).
• Bonus: 12 months of consecutive work experience is preferred, and a High School Diploma or GED is preferred.
