Data Science Intern | Associated Energy Group (AEG Fuels)

The Tone:
This is an internship at Associated Energy Group (AEG Fuels), located in El Segundo, CA. AEG transforms sports and live entertainment, leveraging its venues, franchises, and brands to create memorable moments globally. This role, situated within the Business Intelligence and Analytics department for the Los Angeles Kings Hockey Club, drives strategy, improves revenue, and enhances operational efficiencies. The intern’s work directly contributes to understanding fan behavior and optimizing business outcomes for a leading sports entity.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Part-time (minimum 24 hours per week during summer)
• Location: El Segundo, CA (In-person)
• Pay: $19–$21 hourly
• Team: Business Intelligence and Analytics department at the Los Angeles Kings Hockey Club, partnering with a data science mentor.
• Mission: Identify patterns, predict outcomes, and provide actionable insights to improve business operations for the Los Angeles Kings Hockey Club.
• Tech Stack: Python, R, SQL, PowerBI, Tableau

What You’ll Actually Do
• Model Development: Build data science and advanced analytics models to forecast demand, segment fans, and optimize customer retention for the Los Angeles Kings.
• Data Analysis: Analyze diverse business datasets, including ticketing, sales, fan demographics, social media, and digital marketing, to uncover key trends and patterns.
• Insight Communication: Design interactive Power BI dashboards and present actionable insights to support strategic decision-making across business operations.
• Model Optimization: Understand, optimize, and deploy existing statistical and machine learning models to enhance their performance and utility.
• Data Engineering Support: Assist other AEG sports entities by moving, storing, and organizing data, and sourcing new data through web scraping and API connections.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Current Master’s degree student in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Business Analytics, Data Science, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field.
• Experience: Prior internship, work, or project experience in a related data science or analytics field. Demonstrated experience with statistical analysis and machine learning using Python or R.
• Skills: Intermediate to advanced SQL knowledge for data manipulation and practical experience with data visualization tools such as PowerBI or Tableau.
• Bonus: Familiarity with Large Language Models (LLM) or generative AI, or experience with Microsoft Azure, Databricks, and Databricks SQL platforms.
